Matt Young vs. Orlando Peace

With sparks flying at the weigh in and face off, the tone had already been set for the battle of featherweights. With both fighters coming off losses, this bout was pivotal in the uber-talented 145 lb weight class.

Young, known for his ability to scrap both on the feet and ground was confident going into the fight. Maybe too confident! With little action on the feet Peace was the first to engage and take the fight to the mat where he was able to utilize his superior grappling skills.

As Peace passed Young’s guard he immediately started hunting for a submission. As Young turned into Peace in an attempt to retain guard, Peace snuck an arm though and started to crank on the exposed neck of his opponent. Although Young tried in vain to power out of the move, Peace was too much and picked up his first professional win via Dar’ce choke at 1:33 of the opening frame.

Matt Rider vs. Joe Morris

Possibly two of the nicest, most quiet fighters on the MCC roster, once locked in the cage you’ll quickly see a night and day difference.

Joe Morris is a multi-time recipient of MCC’s Heart of a Warrior award and for good reason. Win or lose he’s never been an easy fight for anyone. Able to withstand punishment beyond belief, the match up with a equally tough, Rider was touted as a potential front runner for fight of the night.

As the first round opened both fighters wasted no time in going after each other. On the feet, on the ground, in the transitions- the action was set at a furious pace with Rider getting the better of the exchanges. Caught in several compromising positions, Morris was forced to rely on both his mental and physical toughness in order to survive.

After a five minute battle both fighters returned to their respective corners to regroup and strategize for the next round.

When the referee started the round it was Morris who came out more aggressively. As Rider shot in for a takedown Morris latched onto his neck looking for a guillotine. Rider dropped to the matt and tried to roll out of it, but Morris hung tough and rolled into mount forcing the tap in a mere 29 seconds.

This was a big win for Morris, who coincidentally picked up another Heart of a Warrior award for his performance.
Dan McGlasson vs. Brian Green

Following a five fight-win streak, Des Moines’ Brian “BG” Green had all the confidence in the world as he welcomed MCC newcomer Dan McGlasson to the cage.

On the feet Green has always been content to trade punches and kicks while searching for the knock out shot, but when the fight hits the mat, fans can pretty much grab their stopwatch and wait.

This fight- not much different!

As McGlasson took Green to the mat he barely had a chance to set into guard as Green’s hips rotated and legs started swinging over the head for a submission. McGlasson may have had a chance against someone other than Green, but with lighting fast submissions, the end came by the time the clocked ticked to the 30 second mark.

Green, who is now on a six-fight win streak (and with no injuries) had already called out for his next opponent; a rematch with his only loss of 2011- Calley Krueger.
Zakk Smith vs. Luis Saldana

Undefeated professional fighter, Luis Saldana, one of MCC’s most exciting up and coming young fighters isn’t like most. While 99.999% of America’s population celebrate their 21st birthday with friends in a bar doing shots, Saldana spent his locked in a cage with someone trying to take his head off!

Zakk Smith, an MCC newcomer, but not new to the fight scene decided that he would really make a name for himself by taking on one of the toughest fighters in the division for his MCC debut.

And the fight did not disappoint!

For almost 15 minutes fight fans watched the two fighters go back and forth, slugging it out on the feet, grappling, and nearly catching each other in various submissions.

Saldana, who clearly got the better of Smith in the stand up
department, exercised extreme patience as he picked his shots. With neither fighter willing to back off and time ticking away, Saldana turned on the afterburners and ripped a page out of the book of UFC fighter, Anthony “Showtime” Pettis.

At the four minute mark of the final round, Saldana charged towards Smith, leaping and pushing off the fence with his right foot he landed a highlight reel Showtime kick, and with a spinning back fist put Smith on his back and pounded him until the referee intervened.

This fight was the most impressive of Saldana’s young career, and the exciting win brought the packed house to their feet. As the crowd sang Happy Birthday to the victorious warrior, Saldana was awarded the Polanti watch from Anglo Diamond for the fighter of the night award.
Chris Haney vs. Nate Williams

With weeks of banter leading up to this fight it’s quite possible that this may have been one of the most hyped fights in MCC’s history. As fans from both sides took to the internet, the burden of performance was left on the shoulders of these 125 pound micro-martial artists.

With a clear height and reach advantage, a lesser experienced Chris “Bad Boy” Haney relied on his intense training and mental focus to carry him to a potential victory. Just like the champ, Haney has been competing in both the 125 and 135 lb. weight classes.

As the title bout began it was no secret that Williams, a collegiate wrestler, would be trying to get Haney to the mat. As Williams shot, Haney sprawled and latched onto the champs neck. As Haney sat back for a guillotine choke it appeared Williams may have been in some trouble. Nevertheless, a resilient Williams waited it out and inched his head and neck away from danger. On top, Williams was able to pass guard and obtain a dominant position in side control for most of the round. Although competitive, the slight advantage was given to Williams as the round closed.

The second round started much the same, but when the fighters hit the mat, Williams made sure he was in zero exposure for a submission. Once again, moving into side control, Williams was able to hammer away as he gained points on the judges scorecards.

Mid-way through the second frame, Haney tried to escape Williams position, but found himself in danger in the scramble. As Williams sensed the ending was near, he turned up the intensity and sunk in a choke which forced the tap from the challenger.

Williams retains the MCC flyweight championship and did so in impressive form.
Allen Hernandez vs. T.J. O’Brien

Former featherweight and lightweight champion, as well as two-time UFC veteran, TJ “The Spider” O’Brien started his way back up the MMA ladder against a fighter who had defeated him five years prior; Allen Hernandez.

Hernandez, who made a splash in the lightweight division by defeating Alex Harper, was thought to be facing MCC champion, Johnny “Hollywood” Case, until the news came that Case was one the potential finalists on the popular reality show, The Ultimate Fighter. With Case on the sidelines and O’Brien looking for action, the powers that be decided to bill their bout as a five-round battle for the Interim Lightweight Championship.

As both fighters entered the ring it was obvious that hard training and discipline was in full effect as both fighters came in the cage in top shape. The underlying rivalry between Team Hard Drive and any fighter from Des Moines was also starting to show as the crowd took turns cheering for each of the fighters.

Throughout each and every round both fighters had their shining moments. O’Brien displayed a much improved stand up game, and Hernandez showed that he has a black belt in avoiding triangle chokes! It’s quite possible, in fact, that Allen Hernandez avoided more submissions in this five round war than many fighters do throughout their entire career- especially given the fact that O’Brien has racked up most of his victories via triangle choke.

From round one through round five both guys kept the pace high and fatigue never became a factor. Most people will never get the chance to experience a five round (25 minutes!) fight, let alone on with this much intensity. Of course, there was a lot on the line here. With O’Brien coming off the UFC losses he’s looking for a ticket back. Hernandez, on the other hand, was looking to prove that he has what it takes to compete on that level.

When the dust settled both men made their way to the center of the cage. Judge #1 scored the bout 49-48 in favor of Hernandez. Judge #2 scored the bout 50-45 in favor of O’Brien. And Judge #3 scored the bout 49-48 in favor of, a new Interim Lightweight Champion, TJ “The Spider” O’Brien.

The good sportsman, O’Brien called for a cheer from the crowd for his fallen foe and said that he would like to have one more fight with Hernandez, since they both hold one win over the other, to determine who the better fighter really is.

If these two can give another performance like this, I don’t think anyone in attendance would disapprove!

Brian Green added to MCC 38 “Hernandez vs. O’Brien”

After a campaign for a new years fight, MCC’s former middleweight champion, Brian Green wishes have been granted.

Riding the wave of a career high five-fight win streak, Green will face off against MCC newcomer, Dan McGlasson on January 27. A win over McGlasson will surely put Green into title contention although his options may become even more open as the fighter who has competed everywhere from welterweight to light heavyweight stated he is looking to make his venture to a lighter weight. in the up coming months.

Green stated via FaceBook, “Last year I learned several things in life, made mistakes and learned from them. I lost my first fight of the year in only 55 seconds, getting knocked out from a fluke slam. I contemplated calling it quits. Then, I found myself closing out the year on a five-fight win streak.”

MCC officials added, “There is no question that Brian has put a lot of time and focus into his career last year. Some people might say that he has shown inconsistency on his record, but look at who he’s fought. If Green keeps winning there is no telling what’s in store for him.”

Saldana KO’s Colon in second, Green fights back to submission victory

In the co-main event of the evening, former trainer partners became adversaries as Luis “The Predator” Saldana looked to keep his professional undefeated record in tact as he welcomed Colon to the pro ranks.

Following a stellar amateur run, Luis Saldana became a professional fighter earlier this year. With two solid wins coming into last nights contest, he had the confidence and training behind him to show he was a force to be reckoned with.

Colon’s last trip into the MCC cage resulted in a razor close decision loss to Mitch Parker, many of whom thought Colon won that battle. Colon proved that if put on his back he was equally dangerous and will always search for a submission no matter what position he’s put in.

As the fight grew closer there was a lot of hype on the Internet surrounding the bout. With both competitors as respectful and soft spoken as they come, they both sat back and decided to let the fight decide who the better of the two were- not the trash talk.

When the bout started both fighters exchanged low kicks and jobs as they circled and eventually clinched. The action his the mat when Saldana latched a hold of Colon’s arm with a Japanese whizzer. As Saldana went to work with his ground and pound attach, Colon climbed up with his legs in search of arm bars and triangles. The fight eventually made its way back to the feet, then back to the mat, up and back down once again. As Saldana, from a scramble, found himself in the mount position, he decided to abort the dominant position as he closed the round strong.

As the second round opened their appeared to be no damage on the faces of either guy, and with no heavy breathing it appeared round two could be just as fast paced and exciting as the first. Both kicked, both punched and once again, the action returned to the mat. Looking extremely patient and composed Saldana made his way back to his feet, keeping Colon within striking distance. As he moved in, Saldana grabbed the Thai clinch and with his forearms bracing his opponents neck, he delivered the fight ending blow- a stiff knee to the solarplex. As Colon collapsed to the ground, Saldana followed with two additional shots before the referee was able to intervene.

This was the third straight stoppage victory for Luis Saldana who proved, once again, that he is the future of the sport.

Colon was tended to by the MCC medical staff. Although he was carried out on a stretcher, later in the evening the MCC staff received word that he was fine and had sustained no injuries, and was released perfectly fine.

“I talked to Jose on the phone,” stated MCC commentator, John Halverson. “He was shaken up and pretty sore, but overall he was doing well. I recapped the fight for him since he was still a little out of it. He thanked everyone for their support and said he would be back. The kid is tough and he is a game match up for anyone. When he is ready, I’m sure he will get another shot.”

Now 3-0 in his professional career, Saldana awaits his next challenge.

Brian Green vs. Kyle Davis

Speaking of professional runs, MCC’s former middleweight champion, Brian Green, was riding a three-fight win streak- all by stoppages, going into last nights contest with Kyle “The Coach” Davis. On the momentum of another possible victory against a tough opponent, Green returned to his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa from Springfield, Missouri to put his sharpened skills to the test.

Davis, a 13-3 champion himself, is no stranger to tough competition. Utilizing a grinding wrestling based attack, he has been able to dominate competition throughout Iowa and Minnesota since his four-year MMA career has began. Green, who was a replacement for injured Victor “Superman” Moreno, would be his toughest test to date.

As the fight started Davis wasted little time in getting Green to the mat. Almost immediately he found himself fending off submission attempt after submission attempt and doing a damn good job of it! Every time Green seemed to lock in something solid, Davis would either slam his way out of it or muscle his way through it. Moving from guard to side control, Davis chipped away with punches, elbows and hammer fists, eventually opening up a cut under Green’s right eye.

As the round ended and the two fighters returned to their corners, the visibly damaged and frustrated, Green, found himself in a familiar position. Of course, for anyone who has every watched Green fight before, this guy has more come from behind victories than Rocky Balboa.

When round two got underway, again, Davis took Green back down to the mat and went to work, employing the same strategy that won him the first round. As the two made their way to the fence, Davis continued to pound away at the bloodied face of Green, splattering blood on the mat and catwalk just beyond. The referee watched closely to ensure that blood was not getting into Green’s eyes. As the action intensified, out of nowhere, Green shifted his hips and grabbed hold of Davis’ arm. Green arched his back to tighten the hold as Davis rose to his feet in an attempt to, once again, slam his way out of it. Nonetheless, Green knew it was locked in and continued to wrench until Davis let out the fight ending verbal submission and the referee was forced to call a halt to the bout with just ten seconds left in the second frame.

This was a great fight and an even greater display of will and determination by the former champion, who is now riding a career high, four-fight win streak.

Following the bout Green was extremely humble giving praise to Davis for his grappling ability, strength and elusiveness. Green has proven to be one of the most popular fighters to ever step into the MCC cage, and with this win, he has quite possibly set himself up for a shot at the title.

Fighter Focus: Kyle Davis is ready to break into the spotlight, prepared to make a name for himself Friday night.

In two days, Kyle Davis, the elder brother of MCC featherweight standout, Kyle Davis, will make his promotional debut. A four-year veteran of the game, Davis faces one of his toughest challenges to date when he meets former champ, Brian Green. And although challenges are nothing new to this United States Marine (hoo-rah!), he knows that you’re only as good as your last fight and opportunity awaits on the horizon.

As Davis nears the end of his training camp, he took some time to introduce himself to the MCC fans and gives a preview of what you can expect this Friday night.

MCC: Kyle, welcome to MCC. Before we get started, take a moment and tell the fight fans about your background in the sport and a little about yourself.

KD: I started wrestling at the age of four and did so until graduating from high school at El Reno High School. El Reno was well known for its wrestling program, as this school boasts 20 consecutive state championships, two of which I took part in. Also, as a wrestler, I earned the title of Greco Roman Wrestling All American, and was ranked fourth in the nation. After making the move to Iowa my junior year of high school and wrestling for West Central Valley High School, I went to state was a one time place winner. Upon graduating from high school in 2006, I joined the United States Marines as a reservist. Shortly after, I started my MMA career in 2007. In 2008 and 2009, my training was done with the Iowa State Muay Thai team. My current MMA training is with Team Insanity, and has been for the past four and a half years, and recently I’ve started additional training at Elite Edge. Also, I earned the title as a longtime Brutaal Iowa Middle Weight Champion in 2009. As far as the stats go, both amateur and professional, I went 8-0 on my amateur fights, and am currently 13-3-1 (1 decision, 7 knockouts, and 5 submissions) fighting professionally.

MCC: That’s an impressive resume so far. Let’s talk about the fight. Originally you were set to face Victor Moreno and recently the switch to fight Brian Green was made. Give us your thoughts on Green, as an opponent, and how you think you’ll match up against him.

KD: I think Brian Green is a worthy opponent. I’ve watched him fight before, and I know he has been in some high profile fights. I am up for the challenge, and I’m very focused on coming out and executing on my plan. I’m excited for the opportunity.

MCC: Making your MCC debut and fighting in the main event, at the same time, does that put any additional pressure on you?

KD: No, not really. I am the Brutaal Middleweight champion, so I’ve headlined shows before. I just keep the same mindset; I’m fighting a tough opponent so I have to fight hard and fight smart. I don’t like to think of it as additional pressure because I always put pressure on myself to perform and win.

MCC: Your opponent is on a three fight win streak, and you both share a recent victory over for MCC champ, Mike “Mini Van” Van Meer, although you finished Van Meer quickly in the first round and Green caught him at the end of the fight. Does this give you confidence in your ability to finish fights?

KD: Yes, if I have the opportunity to finish the fight I will. However, I don’t necessarily go out to finish fights from the get go, but if somebody gives me the opportunity to do so, I will take that opportunity. I like to think I am a smart fighter and try to finish fights when the time is right.

MCC: Obviously, your strong suit is wrestling, but as you know, Green does very well from his back and is able to pull off submissions when under pressure. Does this come in to play when you go over strategies and game plans?

KD: Yes it does. Since Brian is so good with his submissions, we have been working on, for instance, if I go for a take down to pass guard in the air or before we hit the ground. If I do happen to get put in guard, I’ve been working on not trying to strike from guard but to pass.

MCC: Talk about training- you’ve recently started training at Elite Edge, on top of your normal regimen with Team Insanity. What has that experience been like, who are you training with for this fight, and how has the training helped you throughout this fight camp?

KD: It’s been really good. Training has been going really well. It’s helped me a lot with my stand up. Everyone has been working with me and I definitely like it there. I am training with Joe and various other fighters. The training has helped me throughout this fight camp, and I feel good. I feel that I’m ready and as strong as I can be: mentally and physically.
MCC: How about long term MMA goal? Where would you like to be in 1-2 years in the sport?

KD: As long as I’m still fighting, my goal is to fight full time and go to school instead of having a full time job and fighting on the side. I’m not seeking anything overly ambitious; I just want to be able to sustain myself full time as a fighter. However, if the opportunity comes about, I would be more than willing to fight for one of the bigger organizations, such as UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator, etc.

MCC: Is there anyone you’d like to thank?

KD: I’d like to thank the guys I’ve been training and working out with: (MCC fighter) Ronnie Britt, Rick Tasler, (UFC vet) Joe Brammer, Nick Millsap, (MCC champion) Johnny Case and everyone else at Team Insanity and Elite Edge. Also, I want to thank my family and girlfriend for dealing with my working out all the time and my constant complaining about pulling weight.

MCC: Any final words on your bout or for your opponent, Brian Green?

KD: I’ve never fought for MCC before; I’ve only fought for Brutaal. They know me in Minnesota and Northern Iowa, and I intend to put on a show for the Des Moines crowd. Hopefully after this fight is said and done, Kyle Davis will make a name for himself in Des Moines.

Nutrishop presents, MCC 36 “Back in Action”, this Friday at Hy Vee Hall, downtown Des Moines, Iowa.
For MCC’s Brian Green four fights in four months is no problem!

While many mixed martial artists only like to take two to three fights per year, MCC’s former middleweight champion, Brian Green prefers to stay more active. Not only is he busy inside the cage, but outside as well. Earlier this year Green opened Springfield MMA, a martial arts training center in his current home state of Missouri- and in the same town where he was also a full time student the past year. Of course, being a full time student has its set backs to someone who is a professional athlete and businessman. This semester Green wisely decided to sit this one on the sidelines. Of course, if you add in the fact that he has also resumed promoting his own shows you have to wonder how this guy has time to to it all.

Somehow he manages.

“I set my priority on my guys first. I love being a coach. I put them before myself,” Green stated. “I’m bringing in really good coaches like Rundall Mosley, so we are all getting better. I have a lot of experience, so coaching, for me, is a very cool way to give back.”

But don’t expect him to slow down anytime soon.

This Friday night, Green returns to his hometown of Des Moines to step back into the cage against MCC newcomer, Kyle Davis, and although a belt is not on the line, Green will find himself in the familiar position of the shows headlining fight.

Being in the limelight, however, has absolutely no negative effect on how he will perform. Ever the showman, Green prides himself on putting on exciting fights for his hoards of fans. The way he sees it, if he is worthy of being the main event, he’s going to go out there and lay it all on the line. Win or lose, Brian Green can hang with the best.

This fight has somewhat of a different element though. Should Green get past the tough-as-nails Davis, he will have officially bested his longest win streak of his nine-year career, putting his run at four W’s in a row.

Following a tough loss to perennial contender, Calley Krueger, Green rattled off a submission win over two-time Bellator vet and former MCC light heavyweight champion, Demetrius Richards on May 28. He followed that up with a third round, come from behind win over another former MCC champ, Mike “Mini Van” Van Meer on August 5. Finally, on August 27 Green snatched the MUCF middleweight belt from Dan Bolden when he knocked out his trash talking opponent in the first minute of the opening round.

And four wins in a row looks pretty good in this day and age.

“The thing is, I get by this guy and it’s four in a row, and suddenly my career is revived. I don’t know if it can happen. I’ve never been that lucky, but it doesn’t mean I’m not going to go for it,” Green stated.

And when asked about his upcoming bout with Kyle Davis, Green simply stated, “I really don’t know a lot about him, but it’s a fight, ya know?’ He continued by saying, “I was actually contemplating retiring from the sport, but with the recent win streak, I’ve reconsidered. I always expect the worst, and it will be the same going into this fight, but I have been training to come out on top. I’m just hoping I don’t get slammed in fifty seconds and get knocked out again (laughing).”

Green, who recently spent some time training with another MCC champ, and now UFC superstar Jeremy “lil Heathen” Stephens and some of the top talent in at Victory MMA in San Diego, Ca, described the experience as humbling to say the least.

“Man, I got tapped left and right. It was insane. I’ve got pretty decent BJJ, but wow! I felt like a beginner. The level of MMA is so far advanced at that gym, it’s very eye opening.”

And in nine years of competing you’d think that you’ve seen it all!

For a mixed martial artist, momentum and confidence are your two best friends. Combine those two with good old fashion hard work and discipline and you have an unstoppable force. That’s the formula Brian Green will rely on in less than one week. And if the stars align and everything works out in his favor, the run towards the big show is a dream that could very soon become reality.

After two main event fighters dropping off the card, MCC’s former middleweight champion, Brian “Smokin” Green jumped at the opportunity to step in and face Davis on September 23.

Victor “Superman” Moreno informed MCC officials of an ankle injury sustained over the Labor Day weekend which forced him out of the bout.

Green, who just this week celebrated his 26th birthday, recently defeated Mike “Mini Van” Van Meer by third round submission, and followed up that performance with a 55 second knock out over Dan Bolden to win the Midwest Ultimate Cage Fight middleweight belt. Prior to the Van Meer win, Green submitted two-time Bellator vet and former MCC light heavyweight champion, Demetrius Richards.

Now, on the heels of an impressive three-fight win streak, Green has revived his career which includes wins over rising UFC star, Nik Lentz as well another win over Van Meer in their first meeting. Green is also known for his epic battles with Strikeforce and former MCC title holder, Bobby Voelker as well as two-time UFC vet and former MCC champ, Joe “The Doctor” Vedepoe.

Kyle Davis, who was originally slotted to face Blake Breitsprecher, then Victor Moreno is the long-time Brutaal middleweight champ, a United States Marine, and mixed martial arts veteran. Following a tour of duty in Afghanistan, Davis returned to the states and cage to deliver a TKO win over Mike “Mini Van” Van Meer.

The main event bout at MCC 36 marks Davis’ promotional debut. MCC officials have already stated that the winner of the September 23rd meeting will be in line for a shot at the MCC middleweight title.
