This Friday night Des Moines native, Ban Halder makes his return to the cage fresh off a first round victory. Ready to take another step up the lightweight ladder, Halder draws Nick DeWitt, a gritty veteran that has been known to go to war a time or two.
As he finished up his training camp at Porcelli’s Training Center, Halder takes a moment to talk about his upcoming bout.
MCC: Nick, welcome back to MCC. That was a great performance the last time we watched you compete. Now you’ve got your sights set on Nick DeWitt. Give us your thoughts on Nick and how you feel he stacks up as an opponent.
BH: Thank you! Honestly, I don’t know very much about him. I heard he has a couple of losses in a row now so he is probably going to be coming into this fight hungry for a win. I expect it to be a pretty intense fight. I am guessing his stronger part of his game is the ground and, I saw him take his past fights to the ground, other than that I don’t know to much about Nick.
MCC: Do you find it harder to focus your fight camp around someone you haven’t watched compete, or does it really matter?
BH: It doesn’t really matter to me. I see the fight being a war on the feet as he likes to throw a lot of hay makers; more of a brawler style and I try and keep my technique sharp and crisp; more of a boxer. That’s what we’re preparing for. If it goes to the ground I see it turning into a technical fight, me winding up on top working the Porcelli ground pound! That’s pretty much the plan.
MCC: So basically- win by any means necessary, right?
BH: I am always trying to get the win. Who wants to lose?
MCC: Word for DeWitt?
BH: Yep, I’d say, “I hope your ready to be in for a war and let the better-trained man win.”
MCC: Speaking of training, how’s that going?
BH: Training has been great. I am training at Des Moines MMA (Porcelli’s Training Center) with Anthony Porcelli, one of the greatest guys I know. I train with Brian Green, who has taken me under his wing and taught me more then someone would learn in five years in this game. Plus, Bobby Mosley, Johnny Wentland, RJ Harris, Mike Downing, Chad Gebhart, Eddy Cooper and the rest of DMMA these guys are always pushing me in practice.
MCC: So, what can we expect from you Friday night?
BH: I am looking to push the pace of this fight and finish the fight if an opening presents itself. I don’t really feel there are any positions I should stay out of. I know he likes to throw a big right hand that I will have to watch for. Other than that, good luck to Nick, and I hope he’s looking forward into being in a war!
