Champ Williams fired up with new opponent, ready to settle the trash talk in the cage

Given the experience that MCC flyweight champion, Nate “Teddy Bear” Williams has racked up in the last three years of competition, there is not many things that can rattle his cage.

Well, maybe one thing…

“Haney says that he is going to out wrestle me and knock me out or submit me,’ Williams asked? (laughing) “We’ll see about that.”

He’s used to being the underdog. Of course things should quickly change this year given the success he’s tasted in 2011. One thing, however, will never change. He’s used to being the shorter fighter.

“Everybody says the same thing. I’m used to every fighter I face being taller than me, with a longer reach than me. All of my training partners are taller than me too. That doesn’t bother me at all. After all this time; all of these fights, if I let that get to me I would never make any progress in this sport.”

Williams will defend his strap for the first time since winning the first-ever flyweight belt by besting two other 125 lb fighters in the same night.

Williams, who was originally slated to face standout, Frankie Osborn, before he fell victim to the injury bug, was preparing for a potential rematch with Jovon Myles until the plug was pulled on that bout as well. Haney, a Chicago native steps in on the heels of a three fight win streak.

MCC officials noted, “Much like Williams, Haney takes fights bouncing between 125 and 135 lbs. Nate has been on quite a tear lately so Haney is aware that he needs to have his A game intact. He says he’s ready and Williams is always willing to fight whoever is put in front of him. This should make for a great title bout.”

Williams, who is usually not one to talk too much trash about his opponents is choosing to bite his lip instead of firing back at Haney’s words.

“He is coming into my city trying to take my belt. I had to earn this, and I’m not willing to give it up easily. We will just settle it in the cage on January 27″
